# Microsoft Patches RoguePlanet Windows Defender Privilege Escalation After Public Researcher Feud


## The Threat


Microsoft has released an out-of-band security patch for RoguePlanet, a critical privilege escalation vulnerability in Windows Defender that could allow attackers to seize complete control of affected systems. Tracked as CVE-2026-50656, the flaw enables a basic, unprivileged user to escalate their permissions to SYSTEM-level access—the highest privilege tier on Windows—giving attackers unrestricted ability to install malware, steal data, or establish persistence.


The vulnerability was initially disclosed by an anonymous security researcher using the handle "Nightmare-Eclipse," who published a functional proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit in early June.
